Leicester vs Manchester United (0-1)
After stuttering starts to the season, Erik ten Hag's side came into the match off the back of Premier League wins over Liverpool and Southampton and saw both captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo left out of the starting XI for the third game in a row. Christian Eriksen had the first real chance of the game, but his shot was off target, bouncing just wide of the post. It was end to end as Dewsbury-Hall had a chance for Leicester, but de Gea made a comfortable save to keep the scores level. United broke the deadlock after 22 minutes following a Leicester goal kick. Fernandes was given so much space that played it to Rashford, who saw the slack, Sancho had found himself in, and it was easy for him to slot it home. James Maddison went close for Leicester with a superb free-kick which brought an excellent save from United's David De Gea, but the home side struggled to create chances. Barnes tried to head home Dewsbury-Hall’s cross but couldn’t find the target.
The Foxes started the second half by being the better side, pinning United deep in their half for long periods. Unfortunately, this failed to translate into chances, half-chances, or any fractional variety. It appeared as though Leicester would score, but Ten Hag brought on some fresh legs just in time with Ronaldo and Casemiro, the summer acquisition who entered the game after an hour had passed. Ronaldo immediately tried to make an impact, picking out Eriksen in the box, but his pass was intercepted. He had another chance with an impressive overhead kick, but he couldn’t keep it on target. In the dying moments, the Foxes had a chance to draw level, but Justin couldn’t keep his shot down as his shot was blasted high and wide. United was ordinary, but Leicester struggled to penetrate a United team reaping the rewards of a new-found steeliness. It was a good result for Manchester United after a shaky start to the season.
Liverpool vs Everton (0-0)
Liverpool is lamenting more dropped points in the Premier League after being held to a Merseyside derby stalemate by Everton. Despite a lack of goals, Saturday’s 242nd edition of one of English football’s best rivalries was certainly not left wanting for excitement, with Jordan Pickford in sensational form to seal a well-earned point for the hosts at Goodison Park. Liverpool and Everton played out an enthralling Merseyside derby. Chances were flying at both ends of the pitch, goalposts were trembling after shots kept pinging off them. The scoreline is 0-0, primarily due to an enigmatic Jordan Pickford, the Everton goalkeeper. Liverpool started slowly, however, and Everton almost took advantage in the 32nd minute when Tom Davies hit the post with an outside-of-the-boot effort from inside the box after the ball fell kindly for him. The visitors responded with two chances in the 43rd minute. First, Pickford tipped Nunez's right-footed volley onto the bar in acrobatic fashion before Luis Diaz cut onto his right boot and fired a curling shot against the post.
Klopp made an attacking change after the break when he took off Carvalho for Roberto Firmino, and Liverpool started the second half brightly, getting forward well on several occasions. Everton was indebted to Pickford three times in the 64th minute as he turned away a stinging right-footed shot from Firmino and the striker's header from the resulting corner. The England goalkeeper produced several stunning saves, including many to thwart substitute Roberto Firmino, tipping the returning Darwin Nunez’s volley onto the crossbar and crucially getting fingertips to a last-gasp Mo Salah strike that hit the post. Luis Diaz also rattled the woodwork for Liverpool. Frank Lampard's side had a great chance to go ahead in the game in the 65th minute when they progressed the ball forward to the new summer signing Neal Maupay, whose shot was straight at Alisson in a 1v1 situation. Conor Coady thought he had finally broken the deadlock after the interval as he finished off debutant Maupay, who looked to have made up for that previous miss in the 69th minute when he fired a low shot across goal, which Coady turned home. But it was chalked off after a VAR review from close range, only for the Wolves loanee to see his first Everton goal ruled out for offside by the VAR. Everton kept pushing, and Alisson had to be alert to tip over a deflected shot from Dwight McNeil in the 84th minute after the winger cut in from the right. The full-time whistle was met with Cheers from the Everton fans as it was a splendid result for Everton, who is yet to register their first win this season.
Chelsea vs West Ham (2-1)
Chelsea has not been able to string together consistent performances this season, and the Blues will hope to change their fortunes around when they square off against West Ham United on their home turf at Stamford Bridge. Tuchel handed a Chelsea debut to Wesley Fofana after the defender's move from Leicester City. Mason Mount and Havertz were among the players dropped from the starting lineup after the shock defeat to Southampton midweek. Both the teams started the game very slowly, but It took nearly 20 minutes for West Ham to mount their first attack worthy of the name. The resulting low cross was easily snuffed out by Thiago Silva before normal service was resumed. In the 27th minute, Christian Pulisic had a shot blocked by West Ham's new signing Lucas Paqueta after a cross from Reece James was cleared out. The first half ended with the majority of possession with Chelsea, although West Ham did briefly threaten as Pablo Fornals fired a viciously dipping half-volley narrowly high and wide from just outside the box after Thiago Silva had headed a cross clear under pressure.
The second half started more brightly, with Fofana trying his luck from range to no avail. Conor Gallagher halted Michail Antonio as the striker mounted a West Ham counter-attack. Marc Cucurella was forced into a block from a Bowen effort in the 57th minute, and the West Ham forward tested Mendy with a volley in the 62nd minute -- the game's first shot on target. Midway through the second half, West ham took the lead when Edouard Mendy managed to claw a dangerous corner away from his goal. But was floored by a bundle of bodies after the ball was flicked on by Paqueta, allowing Declan Rice to square for Antonio to slot home from close range. Chelsea came back into the game in the 76th minute. A simple long ball from Silva was wonderfully headed down by Ben Chilwell who spun between two West Ham defenders in the penalty area before prodding the ball between Fabianski's legs from a very tight angle. Nearly all of the Chelsea substitutes linked up for the second goal, as Armando Broja found Chilwell running to the touchline just wide of the goal and picked out Kai Havertz for an admirable finish six yards out from the net. Chelsea clinched a 2-1 comeback win against West Ham United dramatically as Kai Havertz scored an 88th-minute winner, with a late equaliser from Maxwel Cornet ruled out by VAR. The game ended after eight additional minutes in a very challenging and impressive victory for Chelsea, who now sits fifth in the table.
Brentford vs Leeds (5-2)
Brentford had the first opportunity of the match inside three minutes. Mathias Jensen pounced on a defensive mistake by Robin Koch before curling an effort just wide. Toney sent Illan Meslier the wrong way from the penalty spot to open the scoring within the 30th minute after being fouled by Luis Sinisterra and doubled Brentford’s lead with a sublime free kick from just outside the box within the 43rd minute. Leeds rallied, and Sinisterra scored a solo goal, flicking the ball forwards over Ben Mee to the edge of the box before providing a sublime finish into the bottom corner.
Jesse Marsch made one change at the break, with striker Patrick Bamford stepping up his return from injury by replacing Harrison. Bamford came close to making an impact, beating Ben Mee for pace down the left and forcing David Raya into making a sharp save soon after the restart. Roca was next to go close when he struck inches over from 25 yards before Meslier made an excellent stop to deny Lewis-Potter when he went through one-on-one. Tyler Adams then played Sinisterra into the Brentford box, but he was denied by Raya and from the resulting counter-attack, the Bees added a third. Following a defensive mistake, Lewis-Potter went through on goal forcing Meslier to make out and make a challenge. The ball then fell to Toney, and he completed his hat trick, finding the target from a long distance. He completed his sixth career hat-trick in stunning style in the 58th minute. Leeds then lost their manager Marsch to a red card for arguing with the officials shortly after Toney's third goal. However, Leeds came back into the game to equalise the score when the ball came out to substitute Luke Ayling, returning from injury, and he played a fine low ball for Roca to convert from close range. The ball was played up to Toney as he appeared to flick it on to an offside Mbeumo, who finished coolly past Meslier. The flag went up for offside. However, replays suggested that the touch hadn’t been off Toney but rather the Leeds captain, Koch. After a second, long VAR check of the day, the decision again went in our favour, restoring our two-goal lead. In contrast to the first 95, the final six minutes passed without incident as Thomas Frank’s side made it two wins in three on home soil this campaign.
Newcastle vs Crystal Palace (0-0)
Eddie Howe handed a first start on home soil to new signing Alexander Isak. Swedish striker netted on his highly-anticipated debut away at Liverpool on Wednesday night. Isak went close to scoring in the first half, robbing Joachim Andersen but failing to get his chip over Vicente Guaita when one-on-one with the Palace keeper. Almiron went close when his strike from the edge of the box was deflected by Andersen before the ball clipped the foot of the right-hand post. Pope had a brilliant day in the office as he was hand to prevent Jean-Philippe Mateta minutes later as the England international pushed away the Frenchman's stinging drive at goal before the striker's rebound was deflected behind for a corner. Palace created plenty of opportunities but was fired straight at Newcastle keeper Nick Pope, who had little trouble dealing with them. Newcastle continued their push for a breakthrough in the final minutes of the opening half as Botman was denied the first goal for the club since the centre-back's volley at the back-post was pushed behind by Guaita.
The home side thought they had taken the lead six minutes into the second half thanks to an own goal from Tyrick Mitchell. But following a controversial VAR review, the goal was disallowed as Joe Willock was adjudged to foul Vicente Guaita inside the penalty area despite replays showing the midfielder to be pushed by Mitchell into the Palace goalkeeper. Almirón squandered a golden opportunity to break the deadlock as he latched onto Longstaff's neat pass before dragging his effort wide of the target. Pope produced a crucial stop to deny Palace substitute Odsonne Édouard and keep Newcastle United on level terms, getting down low to turn the former Celtic striker's shot past the far left-hand post. Vicente Guaita enjoyed a particularly commendable performance, making several crucial saves worthy of a point in themselves; in front of him was a defence that had to work relentlessly to keep out a determined home attack. The full-time whistle allowed St James’ Park’s 50,000 spectators to breathe for the first time since 3 pm, and players and fans had plenty to discuss despite having witnessed no goals. Despite the two sides racking up 38 shots between them, the game finished scoreless to leave Newcastle in 11th position in the table on seven points, with Palace 15th on six points.
